Subject: Natural Miscarriages

A writer claims that because many pregnancies end in miscarriages, abortion is natural and no big deal
("Ending unwanted pregnancy is legitimate , but never easy," 1/8/11). I guess that means that
because cancer, heart attacks and strokes occur "naturally," we should just accept them?

The point that is missed is that all living things are deteriorating. Each individual ages, mostly from
mutations of cells of the body. J. C. Sanford, in his book "Genetic Entropy" showed that the whole
human race is deteriorating. This occurs because of accumulated mutations of the reproductive cells.
And natural selection cannot help because each surviving individual (the most seriously affected
miscarry) has over 100 mildly harmful mutations. We are all defective and our species is headed for
extinction - not upward evolution.
